Updates since Katong Trip

Hey people, sorry for not updating my blog.... have been really lazy to blog those events happened around me. To start with, I shall discuss about the event today - AWWA Mooncake Festival Celebrations.

24 Sep 07, Monday - AWWA Mooncake Festival @ AMK Ave 6, Blk 120.

Well, today i was feeling lazy... so I told my mum I not going to Chinatown to go buy mooncakes le. My mum was like interested to buy Teochew La pia - a different version compared to the cantonese version.

My mum was like quite diaoz cause she seemed rather interested to buy the moonies. hahahs. but in the end i keep saying no, then she also sianz to go out herself then she say nvm lor. hahahahas.

So Wilson and I met happily at 5pm @ Rotary FSC and found out it was damn quiet. And found out all left without us le! OMG! hahahas... Then we took 74 to destination.

Haiyo. The bus stop and the exact location is far from what Glenn described. hahaahahs. so we finally found the place and sprang into action. Realised the elderly were busying getting the lantern done up. like a mini competition. but it was quite unsuccessful though. they looked so bored meddling with the lanterns.

After the lanterns it was water distribution. just we thought we would want to serve Chinese Tea, mineral water suddenly came in and it got quite messy. We used some styrofoam contained to hold all the drinks before serving them. Spilled a few cups as i missed some steps. But the rest was ok...

Food was to be served. The proccess was relatively fast. Suddenly, all the food distribute already. but there were vegetarians problems as the food catered isnt vegetarian certified. There was an uncle who kept shouting he did not eat the bee hoon as it contained garlic. I was thinking - shouldn't it be considered vegetarian - garlic? zzzzzz. He ate the soon kueh in the end when actually inside contains dried shrimps. zzzzzz

Desserts - fruits like grapes were served. Then steamed yam. The steam yam looked quite good but i did nt manage to get a test try of how is the taste. the yam - some were a bit hard la. but actually it is quite ok! there was one old naggy uncle who complained about the yam. But i thought it was quite ok? he returned me a piece of yam which he thought it was quite hard and when i held on to it, a light press showed me the yam was rather soft afterall. Speechless... hahaha. Oranges were served as well.

The performance using the gu zhen and the electronic piano is really good. but the emceeing was quite poor as there wasnt proper introduction when the people were playing and keeping the people entertained. so it was like ??? to me when these people start strumming on the gu zhen, the clarinet and so on.

The skit was quite good as it managed to captivate the audience's attention. i think the skit was nice esp the costumes, the fake hats, the fake moon etc. quite interesting and the people know what is going on in the scenes.

then it was the pomelo peeling made me shudder. I was carrying a knife going around cutting the top of the pomelo and making some slits so its easier to peel. the knife was damn sharp la! I was like walking around in a knife like wanna kill someone or something... hahahas.

The rest was not bad la. got strumming of guitar by evangeline, singing by derek - his trademark songs and some new songs too.

Later it was a trip back to Clementi via chartered bus. Then some makan with lianhui, jansen, wilson, mengkui, ziwen, and shirley.

My feedback (sent to glenn)

1. The volunteer management looks very messy on that day. I see a lot of "free" volunteers having their chats instead of helping. Or was it oversupply of volunteers? As you mentioned in the email, there was no pre programme meeting. Hence there were no clear roles defined for the volunteers. Perhaps the tables could have been numbered? So that you can assign volunteer A or B to manage these tables. Please, please track the volunteers coming. So that you can plan like person A do wad. even without a meeting. Its easier to assign this way.

2. The ambience wasnt there. When I reached there, I realised you all were having the lantern competition thingy. The mic/sound system wan't fantastic. I think the Rotary FSC sound system is even better! Hahahas. I believe on your part, theere should be some problems getting it done. Perhaps there should be some chinese orchestra music being played in background. The atmosphere is much nicer! ahahahahas. Can try loaning the speakers and mixer from SDAR AV Equipment.

3. Foodie squalms. Ermm. Vegetarian. pls prepare for em! Some end up ate food that APPEARS to be vegetarian when its nt. ie. soon kueh.

4. Water messy? Hmmm... perhaps a sequence to whether chinese tea or mineral water served first? hahahas... people were like all confused.

5. Knife horror - Don't ever let us carry knife around the place cutting pomelos. Its so scary! hahahas. Serious. Just let us cut the pomelo the parts needed to be sliced (top) and slids at the slides. That's all. BEFORE giving the tsbles. The old aunties were damn SCARED when i was cutting the pomelo for her table.

6. Food for volunteers. - For community service, when it comes to foodie giving to volunteers, there must be a system set. It is either BEFORE the event start ie. 4plus or AFTER event ends 9plus. It is quite unsightly to see volunteers eating in duration of helping. And the volunteers would be so called FULL time helping the event.

Alternatively, you may devise a system such that like volunteers in A grp go eat first. Then B group. Then like this, in any time, there should be someone tending the tables or attending to the elderly.

23 Sep 2007 Sunday - Out with mum to GIANT

A lazy afternoon as usual, then went out with mum to buy pomelos in Giant. The pomelo was damn cheap la... $1.99 only. hahahas. so its like we went to choose the pomelos, put them in a safe place, then went to have dinner and the "Spagehett Too". The food there verynice! Haha. Enjoyed the desserts, esp the apple crumble with the yummy ice cream on top. The mixture of warm and cold is really very exciting! hahahs. Then went back to collect our pomelo and continued shopping. bought other things like prawn. hahas.

22 Sep 2007 Saturday - Out with mum to Aljunied

Met Chuan at 4pm to pass me his hard disk drive. Hope my recovery of data will start soon! Played pool and out of 3 games, 2 chuan won me and 1 chuan won ben =.=. Chuan is getting more skillful in his pool! BEWARE! hahahahas.

Went out with mum to aljunied (Geylong Lorong 25A). to change the diesel oil reeked Teochew La Piah. the man decided to refund us :) But he is damn egoistic la! Kept shouting cannt be that the La Piah has the diesel oil taste.

Went to mymum's old house at Lorong 25a. It has become a mini restuarant selling HK style food. We tried some items and then went to eat our main course - Steamboat @ $13 with no hidden cost. The food was not bad but the soup is damn tasteless, need a lot of soy sauce to rescue it. But the prawns there were damn fresh and tasty! :)

then we went to geylong lorong 27 to buy the teochew lapiah. it was quite nice though, but the guy kept focusing on his customer who was buying like boxes, Like so biased! zzzzzz

20 Sep 2007 Thursday - Reccee for Chalet

Went to Aloha Changi and Changi Village to recee the Chalet we thought of staying there. In the end, we went to Changi Village to eat, and in the process of getting the chalet things done, we got quite lost. Used my WAP to surf for the website with the map. But the map pic was far too small. hahhas. Cannt read it at all.

In the end, we cancelled the idea of staying there due to its uluness and also that place was quite eerie / creepy as it was damn quiet. There is this orange valley nursing home but it seems vacant as someone paste some masking tape over the name on the main entrance. But it looks a bit eerie somehow and kwanchet said he heard some ghost stories there and after some discussion, we decided nt to use the place as its very inconvenient for everyone also.

There was this Malay auntie who smiled at us when we were at the Chalet. I thought she was the occupant there but KC kept saying she was the cleaner. Well, I am really not too sure either. LOL.
